Poultry industry faces rationalisation
14 Nov 2008

The competition regulator the ACCC is investigating a proposed takeover by Baiada Poultry of Barrter Enterprises/Steggles Foods which would create the largest poultry processor in Australia. Baiada is currently the third biggest processor, behind Steggles and Inghams. The deal is expected to lead to a long expected rationalisation of the poultry industry which has suffered from overcapacity, discounting and rising costs. Barrter/Steggles process more than 2.4 million chickens per week supplying major retailers as well as McDonalds, KFC, Red Rooster and other fast food chains. Source: Financial Review 14/11/08
