Grape surplus needs pruning
17 Nov 2008

Production in the Australian wine industry needs to be cut by 20 per cent to avoid the problems associated with a big surplus of grapes according to John Grant the president of Constellation Wines Australia. The number of growers also needs to be rationalised especially in the warmer inland regions who supply the low cost, high volume markets of the US and the UK, the leading winemaker told an industry conference last week. The average Australian harvest is now about 1.9 million tonnes from 170,000 Ha of vines, but demand is running at about 1.5 million tonnes. About ninety per cent of all wine producers are losing money said Grant. The 2008 wine grape harvest is expected to come in at about 1.93 million tonnes. Source: Herald Sun 17/11/08
