Indonesia looks to limit beef imports
14 Apr 2009

Indonesia will impose quotas on beef imports from New Zealand, Australia and Brazil to protect local cattle farmers. In from a wave of imports, Agriculture Minister Anton Apriyantono says as reported Jakarta Post. Indonesia imported 107,000 tons of meat (including live cattle), mostly from Australia, New Zealand and the United States in 2008. Agriculture Minister Anton Apriyantono says the country will soon begin importing beef from Brazil to provide competition for beef from Australia and New Zealand. The recently signed ASEAN – Australia – New Zealand free trade agreement is expected to boost the beef trade to Indonesia with Indonesian tariffs, currently five per cent, due to be phased out by 2020.
