Slime to power cars
7 Dec 2007

In the future fuel may come from an unlikely source – algae. The plants consume large quantities of carbon dioxide and produce globules of fat that can be harvested and turned into biodiesel. Algae can grow in salt water or even waste water, grow up to 40 times faster than other crops, and don't take up land that could be used for other crops. One scientist has estimated that algae can produce 10 to 100 times more energy per acre than crops currently grown for fuel such as corn. While there is still a long way to go before it can be grown cost-effectively on a commercial scale entrepreneurial companies in the US and Europe are working hard on trials.
