Ethanol mandate will drive food prices higher

Ethanol sceptics in the US are lobbying hard against a proposal being considered by congress to double the volume of ethanol being produced from corn. Consumers are concerned at rapidly escalating food prices after many years of cheap food and feed for livestock. Experts say that ethanol is contributing to higher food costs but that it only one factor. There is also the higher price of fuel adding to transport costs and strong growth overseas that is increasing demand. The vice-president of government affairs for the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, Jay Truitt, said that people seem to be caught up in an almost spiritual fervour about ethanol and that they were having trouble getting anyone to think about the consequences of their actions. "We think there will be a day when people ask, 'Why in the world did we do this?'" he said.
