Welcome rains cause problems for some 29 Jan 2008
While rain along the east coast of the country has helped many farmers, there are also those who have missed out or had their crops destroyed by flooding. Cotton and rice crops are at their smallest in decades with the rains coming to late for the growing cycle but improved storage levels mean that the outlook for next year is better. The cotton crop will only be 13 per cent of the normal yield and instead of 1 million tonnes of rice only 15,000 to 20,000 tonnes is expected. Around Emerald the expected bumper sorghum crop has been destroyed by floodwaters and in some areas up to 90 per cent of cattle are still unaccounted for.
