Wheat exporters unhappy about delayed decision 12 Feb 2008
The Agriculture Minister, Tony Burke, has rejected 35 applications to export wheat and approved three, with one more still being considered. The move has prompted criticism from analysts who say that growers who have already sold wheat to the AWB would be disadvantaged. With substantial costs involved in running the pool, less growers contributing means that they have more of the management costs to bear. Export operators are concerned that the delay in accreditation may mean that they may not be able to find wheat to meet their orders that has not already been committed to the pool.
