Investors chase farm returns 7 Mar 2008
The private sector is taking an increased interest in agriculture is the numbers attending the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics annual conference this week is any guide. ABARE says that the outlook for Australian agriculture is strong due to high commodity prices and continued high levels of farm equity. While there is some anxiety around the availability of sufficient fertiliser and herbicides, the next wheat crop is expected to be a big one as farmers try to make the most of record global wheat prices. ABARE forecasts a lift in total farm exports of 18 per cent to $31.4 billion for 2008-09 compared with an estimated 4 per cent fall this year.
