NFF targets middle men over grocery prices

The National Farmers Federation has warned that any rush to cut grocery prices could end up hurting farmers. In a submission to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's inquiry into grocery prices, the NFF said that there is a large gap between the price of produce at the farm gate and on supermarket shelves. While it says that drought is a factor in food prices as well as the strong market position of big retailers, the NFF wants the inquiry to consider the number of costly intermediaries which could be more of an issue. The NFF has quoted figures from AgForce which show that in a price increase of 70 cents for a loaf of bread, the grain cost only contributed 10.7 cents, even though grain prices have gone from $200 to $400 per tonne.
