Nationals stick to their guns over single desk
19 Mar 2008

The argument between the Nationals and Liberals over the future of wheat exports has exploded, dealing a blow to the prospects of a merger. Nationals leader Warren Truss declared his party's support for a single desk arrangement yesterday morning but sources say that Peter Costello and Alexander Downer were angry that he had done so before the matter was discussed by the coalition party room. Many in the Liberal Party support deregulation and leader Brendan Nelson, who had supported the idea of a merger earlier this month, said in the afternoon that the idea "has merit" but that there were no immediate plans to act on it.
