Guest workers approved for fruit only
18 Aug 2008

Pacific guest workers will be limited to working in horticulture industries in regions with identified labour shortages. The federal government will issue 2,500 visas to workers from four Pacific countries for placements of up to seven months. The trial program is designed to help farmers who complained that $700 million worth of fruit was not being picked because of labour shortages. The first workers are expected to arrive within months to businesses around Swan Hill and Griffith.
