Crime affects almost one in five farms

Seventeen per cent of farms experienced farm crime at least once in 2003 according to the Australian Institute of Criminology. Farms in very remote areas and those close to urban centres were more likely than average to experience crime. Remote farms were more likely to experience crimes such as livestock theft, illegal hunting and fishing, theft of materials and dumping of waste. Accessible farms near urban centres were more likely to experience theft of farm machinery, vehicles or tools and burglary.
