Lower grain prices in store for late harvests 14 Jan 2005
ABB, AWB and GrainCorp have begun to close grain pools in some ports and receiving zones, with the expected priced to be paid on some replacement pools already at a discount of $15 a tonne to the estimated price on the number one pool. AWB closed its number one national wheat pool for deliveries in Newcastle, Port Pirie and Geraldton. The AWB closed some Queensland pools earlier this month. AWB has now opened a number two pool to take remaining wheat, estimates for which are currently trading at a $15/tonne discount to those of the number one pool. A second grain handler, ABB Grain, closed its extended pool and single payment pool closed on Monday for growers delivering in most zones in Western Australia and South Australia. GrainCorp last week closed its number one canola pool at all sites in NSW, opening a number two pool in its place – base estimates for which sit at a $20/t discount to the number one pool.
