Crop production lifts off 31 Jan 2005
Agriculture has bounced back strongly from the drought, with a 12 per cent increase in the value of production to $36.6 billion in 2003/04, the Australian Bureau of Statistics figures estimate. Crop production increased dramatically, though livestock slaughtering increased in value only slightly, while the value of livestock products actually fell, with the largest fall in value in the wool market. The ABS estimated the wholesale value of crops to have risen by 30 per cent to $20.2 billion. The value of wheat production increased by 112 per cent; barley rose by 77 per cent; grain sorghum by 11 per cent to $334 million; oats by 40 per, and rice by six per cent. The value of sugar cane cut for crushing fell by 17 per cent. Cotton was also down 19 per cent.
