Feds withhold sugar subsidies
1 Feb 2005

Sugar growers will have to wait for government subsidies worth an average of $5,000 each, and due for payment a month ago. The federal government says that six regional advisory groups established within the sugar industry have failed to provide adequate plans for reform. The government paid a first tranche of subsidies – described as “sustainability grants” – in June 2004. The second tranche was made conditional on industry restructuring. So far only 41 farmers have applied for grants of up to $100,000 to leave the land.
