Rains brighten summer outlook 9 Feb 2005
The National Australia Bank’s quarterly survey of the rural outlook found that business conditions in the December 2004 quarter were the strongest in four years. Favourable indicators include above average summer rainfall in south-eastern Australia; strong prices for red meat and dairy products; record sales of farm machinery and tractors, and a 60 per cent increase in the cotton plantings. Less favourable indicators include weak farm confidence according to surveys; a weak outlook for wheat prices, and a precarious water supply in the Murray-Darling basin in spite of the summer rain.
