Dairy subsidies misused
14 Feb 2005

Dairy farmers have abused the spirit of the federal Government's $2 billion bailout of the industry, using grants of up to $60,000 as income instead of making their operations more efficient. In some cases husband and wives each received the no-strings-attached subsidy of $58,510. A government evaluation of the subsidies and deregulatiuon found that while producers in Victoria tended to invest in efficiency improvements and capital, dairy farmers in NSW and Queensland have used assistance to reduce interest payments and supplement income rather than prepare for deregulation.
