Western wheat belt the pick of the crop

The Australian Bureau of Agriculture and Resource Economics estimates that the top eight per cent of broadacre farmers earn an average of $289,000 a year. And the pick of the crop, the top 25 per cent of farmers in the West Australian wheat belt, made an average profit of $561,000 in 2003. Those at the bottom of are making so little that they must supplement their incomes with a job in town. However, the typical farmer makes an extremely modest income. The average income for all farmers in 2003 was just $6,980. The worst third made an average loss of $25,000.
