Interest rate subsidies tide farmers through drought
14 Mar 2005

A new study by the Australian Bureau of Agriculture and Resource Economics shows that that the average farm in receipt of interest rate subsidies from the federal government incurred a loss of $84,000 in 2002, a year of drought conditions in many areas of Australia. ABARE said that among farms that did not seek assistance, the average loss that year was $64,000. But by two years later, the typical farm lost about $7,000, regardless of whether the farmers received interest rate subsidies or not.
