Farms still a key driver of economic activity 15 Mar 2005
Farms and the industries and businesses which rely on them account for 12 per cent of Australia's annual economic output, research by the Australian Farm Institute found. The researchers defined the farm-dependent economy as agriculture, plus the farm input and output sectors, which include meat processing, property and business services, wholesale trade, clothing, food retailing and accommodation, cafes and restaurants. The research showed that while agriculture alone accounted for about three per cent of annual GDP, the wider measure was much higher.
