Mallee and northern Wimmera qualify for drought subsidies
5 May 2005

About 2,300 farmers in Victoria's Mallee and northern Wimmera will be able to qualify for drought assistance, following a decision by the agriculture minister to include the two areas as eligible for an “exceptional circumstances” declaration. That declaration enables farmers in the affected area to apply for six months' worth of income support from Centrelink. If the National Rural Advisory Council finds a full EC declaration is warranted, then farmers will be eligible for up to two years' income support and interest rate subsidies of up to $100,000 a year. The area includes parts of the Mildura, Swan Hill, Horsham, West Wimmera and Northern Grampians council areas.
