Government leans on banks over farm debt
18 May 2005

The deputy prime minister John Anderson held private talks with the National Australia Bank and the Australian Bankers Association to convince financiers to keep bankrolling farmers through the worsening dry. The Deputy Prime Minister said he was increasingly worried that some farmers could go to the wall if rural lenders became nervous about the loss of another winter crop. A spokesman for the NAB said drought-hit farmers were being advised to speak directly to their bankers and advise of problems servicing debts.
