Industry infighting sours sugar reforms 3 Jun 2005
Wrangling between the various sugar industry groups means the federal government is still to resolve how to allocate more than $300 million in assistance intended to force the departure of some cane farmers from the industry, and to improve productivity and downstream sales of sugar and cane-related products. Cane growers, the milling council, Queensland Sugar which markets sugar, and Queensland Terminals which operates the sugar terminals cannot agree on priorities for investment of the federal funding. The government-appointed Sugar Industry Oversight Group had issued a deadline for submissions from industry participants which expired a month ago. Each region was required to develop a regional plan but the group has now called for participants to submit new plans.
