Banks examine rural closures 27 Jan 2004
The Australian Bankers' Association will form a working party to examine banks' closure in rural locations, following a critical report by a parliamentary committee. The study recommended that financial institutions consult with local communities on closures and provide six months' notice of their intentions.
The Big Four banks all state they have placed a moratorium on further branch closures and the ABA says outlets have actually increased slightly in rural areas over the past few years. But ABA CEO David Bell said it would respond to the parliamentary report, as the ABA's position is that where the banking industry can improve its contributions to rural communities then "those opportunities should be taken".
