PM warns US again: no FTA without agriculture
3 Feb 2004

Prime Minister John Howard has again warned the US that there will be no free trade agreement unless Australian farmers are granted access to American markets. Mr Howard talked overnight with Trade Minister Mark Vaile - who's in the midst of protracted FTA negotiations - and said the deal would not stack up without concessions on dairy, beef and sugar.

US dairy farmers are strengthening their opposition to increased Australian imports. They have been supported by 30 senators, who have written to President Bush warning against any cuts in dairy protection. US dairy sector tariffs are equivalent to 60 per cent, which means Australian farmers have great difficulty in gaining access to cheese, skim milk powder and whey powder markets.
