Sugar package will not save industry: Katter 3 May 2004
The $444 million aid package for Australia's sugarcane growers will not be enough to save the industry, says Queensland Independent MP Bob Katter. He said while the package was welcomed it was not a panacea, with the industry in a state of collapse.
Mr Katter, a former National MP, is contemplating setting up a new political party to contest Government seats in the next federal election. He ran several Independents against government MPs in Queensland's recent state election but wants to have a bigger impact in the federal poll.
Mr Katter said "we are fighting for our lives in country Australia: there's hardly an industry in rural Australia that's not in a very serious state of collapse - and that's not an exaggeration".
