Win for rural roads in Vic budget 6 May 2004
Rural road funding has received an injection of almost $140 million in the Victorian State Budget, released this week. The rural road funding package includes $65 million for high accident risk areas ("black spots") on rural roads, with the other $73 million going to a general rural roads program. Risky rural roads already identified for work include the Myrniong-Trentham Road, the Strzelecki Highway in South Gippsland, the Melba Highway at Murrindindi and the Epping-Kilmore Road.
Other Budget commitments include almost $80 million of capital works for regional nursing homes, plus another $60 million to be spent on regional hospitals; $53 million to build regional schools; $2.3 million to help the state's food industry become more internationally competitive; $1.5 million for a Regional Investment - Make It Happen program, which helps country businesses gain access to superannuation capital;and a $100 million boost for fire services, following recommendations of the Esplin report after last year's bushfires.
