Banana quarantine row 10 May 2004
The row over easing quarantine restrictions on bananas is continuing, with suggestions that none of the experts hired to investigate the proposed changes agreed with a government report on the issue. The Opposition's agriculture spokesman said last week that the only members of the Impact Risk Assessment panel to agree with the proposals were government employees. He said none of the independent members on the IRA team had signed off on the report.
The Australian Banana Growers' Council said the new information throws doubts on claims by Biosecurity Australia that support for its report opening the way for imports of Cavendish bananas from the Philippines was unanimous.
