Hemp production trials extended in NSW
10 May 2004

Trials of commercial hemp production will continue in NSW despite the limited success of tests underway since 1995, the NSW Government says. But the Government warned people interested in growing the crop that it contains only low levels of THC, marijuana's active ingredient.

Since 1995 there have been 60 trials delivering important data on hemp-growing and the potential of fibre manufacturing. Early trials were difficult, producing low yields. The first planting was carried out at Armidale but never harvested as it performed below expectations.

State MP Steve Whan said this sector has been difficult but the Government is willing to look at new crops for farmers and ways to expand agriculture in NSW. He said there's a growing market for hemp fibre overseas, so if production is successful in the long term it could become an export product.

The Sunday Age, 9/5/04.
