Regional Aust supports further Telstra sale: finance minister
14 May 2004

The federal Finance Minister, Nick Minchin, believes regional Australians are supportive of the further sale of Telstra. He made the comments after ALP Senator Sue Mackay asked if the Government has abandoned plans to sell Telstra, as its services are still inadequate. Ms Mackay asked why the Government is planning to sell Telstra without any requirement that regional services are up to scratch.

Senator Minchin said the sale is still likely to happen but not before 2006-2007. He said the Government has made a substantial investment in telecommunications in rural and regional Australia, and standards are on track to meet the preconditions of a Telstra sale. Senator Minchin quoted Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson's recent statement that rural and regional Australians are now supportive of the further sell-off of Telstra.
