NSW trial for GM canola despite Monsanto pullout

The NSW Government has approved the first farm trials of GM canola, less than a month after Monsanto withdrew from Australian research trials. The Minister for Primary Industries has now granted permission to Bayer CropScience to plant GM canola on three sites covering 40 hectares. The trial will compare GM and traditional crops. A condition of the trial is that Bayer take out public liability insurance to protect farmers whose crops could be contaminated.
The Minister, Ian Macdonald, said without trials farmers will remain uninformed about the potential benefits of GM. Results will help the farming community make choices about the technology based on science, not fear, propaganda or bias, he stated.
