CWA voices protest over Vic dump 2 Jun 2004
The Country Women's Association has joined the opposition to Victoria's new toxic waste dump site. The CWA passed a resolution at its state conference in Shepparton last week calling for the State Government to investigate alternative Crown land sites to the proposed site at Nowingi. The vote was unanimous, following strong opposition to the proposed Mallee site, near Mildura.
CWA members felt strongly that waste generated in the city should be dealt with there. Members argued that a potential health threat was posed not only to people living near the dump but also along the route. It's a 500km drive from Melbourne to Nowingi and there's risk of an accident and a spill. Towns along the route are not equipped to deal with such a spill.
The association believes an alternative site should be sought closer to Melbourne.
