Tougher live export rules
3 Jun 2004

The Federal Government has moved to tighten up regulations for Australia's live animal export industry by introducing legislation into Parliament yesterday. The Bill follows a package of reforms worth $11 million announced in May, the Federal Agriculture Minister, Warren Truss, said. The catalyst was last year's Cormo Express debacle, in which a shipment of 57,000 sheep was rejected by Saudi Arabia.

If the legislation introduced yesterday is adopted, it will close a loophole under which an exporter could use an associate's export licence if his own had been suspended.
