ACCC offers chicken farmers poultry deal 10 Jun 2004
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has given Victoria's chicken farmers the power - temporarily - to enter into collective negotiations with the state's five poultry processors. The commission moved yesterday to resolve difficulties arising from a recent Federal Court decision that effectively deregulated the industry.
Chicken farmers had no legal footing on which to mount collective discussions about setting contract terms with processors, but the interim order by ACCC enables them to do so. The temporary order will remain in place until a final decision is reached.
The ACCC said it encourages growers and processors to consider developing a single set of mutually suitable collective bargaining arrangements. The commission would assist in facilitating this in any way it could, said acting chairwoman Louise Sylvan.
