Funds to wipe out feral pigs
11 Jun 2004

The Federal Government announced last week it will allocate $500,000 from the Natural Heritage Trust to target the wild pig problem. The funds will be administered by the Bureau of Rural Sciences as part of the National Feral Animal Control program.

Sixteen new projects to shoot, bait and trap wild pigs around eastern and northern Australia will receive $200,000, in addition to state and local funds. A further $299,000 has also been allocated to seven existing projects which are examining ways of controlling pests such as foxes, rabbits, wild dogs and birds.

Agriculture Minister Warren Truss said feral pests cost Australia more than $500 million a year. Feral pigs alone cause at least $100 million worth of damage to agriculture each year.
