VCAT flattens plantation project
30 Jun 2004

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal has rejected Willmott Forests' bid to establish a 450-hectare pine plantation in a remote area of East Gippsland. VCAT knocked back an appeal by Willmott Forests against East Gippsland Shire Council's refusal to grant a permit. The decision was based on the likelihood of the plantation having negative socio-economic effects on the small community.

Willmott had applied to establish a pine plantation on a farming property at Deddick/Dellicknora near Bonang and Tubbut. VCAT said the community is unique in its isolation and has limited private land available for farming. VCAT also said the proposed project would not have had a detrimental effect on the environment or landscape.
