Victoria will not let farms go to the dogs

The Victorian Government has backed down on a decision to cut the number of wild-dog trappers in the state's north-east. Funding for two doggers, hired after last year's bushfires, ran out yesterday, but the Government announced ongoing support for three positions. The Government faced heavy lobbying from farmers over the loss of the doggers; hundreds of livestock have been killed on farms in the north-east and in Gippsland, costing farmers tens of thousands of dollars.
Victorian Environment Minister John Thwaites said the north-east Gippsland and east Gippsland wild dog management groups will each get $150,000 to help retain doggers and develop long-term control plans.
The contracts for the five remaining doggers, employed in east Gippsland, will expire in August.
