Bill to end barley monopoly stalled
2 Jul 2004

South Australia's Liberal and Democrats parties have vowed to block a bill to abolish SA's barley export monopoly. The SA Government was aiming to get the bill through parliament by June 30 to avoid paying $2.93 million in penalties to the National Competition Council. The NCC is pushing for the scrapping of the monopoly.

The bill would mean that ABB Grain retained the main export licence for barley for five years from mid-2005, but extra licences could be granted to other groups that applied for them.

Australian Financial Review, 2/7/04.
