Traceability becoming beef's 'price of entry' 2 Jul 2004
Meat and Livestock Australia says traceability and source verification are quickly becoming the "price of entry" for competition in the international beef trade. MLA's MD Mark Spurr recently returned from the World Meat Congress and said individual animal ID was one of the key topics. Delegates expected it will eventually become a prerequisite for international market access and those countries not looking at traceability run the risk of getting left behind.
In addition to Australia, Brazil, Argentina, the US and Canada are all moving towards animal IDs with increasing pace. The US will have its traceability plan in place in August, Mr Spurr said. The US Government allocated $US18 million this year and $US33 million for 2005 to drive its program. Both Brazil and Argentina can already trace back to a single property source all their export beef, and they're well advanced in plans for comprehensive individual animal ID systems.
