Australia-Thailand sign free trade deal
6 Jul 2004

Australia and Thailand signed a free trade agreement yesterday, with the pact to come into effect from January 1, 2005. Tariffs on 53 per cent of Australian products will be dropped immediately, and more than 90 per cent of Australia's tariffs on Thai imports will go once the agreement comes into effect.

However there are long phase-in periods for certain products, with tariffs on some Australian dairy products not being lifted until 2025.

The Federal Government believes the agreement with Thailand will boost the Australian economy by $3 billion.

The Australian, 6/7/04.
