Citrus trees cut to contain disease
9 Jul 2004

More than 1,000 orange and mandarin trees on Evergreen Farms in the Emerald district will be destroyed as Queensland authorities fight to contain citrus canker. Contractors will today begin cutting, piling and burning the trees, which have been diagnosed with the disease.

The number of trees to be destroyed may go higher, depending on further tests on plant material taken from the property, which has about 250,000 citrus trees.

Officials have begun talks on re-opening southern and export markets to Queensland citrus products. This could lead to fruit going interstate and to export outlets by the middle of next week.

State Primary Industries Minister Henry Palaszczuk urged Queenslanders to double their intake of citrus fruits to help growers out.

The Courier-Mail, 9/7/04.
