Citrus disease threat to gardens 19 Jul 2004
The Queensland Government is considering quarantine bans on murraya or "mock orange". Other states fear it's a natural host for citrus canker and have been pressing for restrictions on its sale. Mock orange is popular for use in hedge-growing by gardeners and landscapers.
From today, the movement of 1,500 species of plants in the citrus-related rutacae family will be banned, prompting concerns the nursery industry will be hit by the canker scare.
Also today, the Primary Industries Department will start destroying another 40,000 citrus trees on canker-affected Evergreen Farms at Emerald. The Queensland Government will also apply today to the National Management Group to lift interstate bans on its citrus.
