Labor plans protection for dairy farmers 23 Jul 2004
Under Labor's new dairy industry policy, supermarket giants Woolworths and Coles would be subject to greater scrutiny so dairy farmers would be paid a fair price for milk. Labor would strengthen the voluntary Retail Grocery Code by placing it within the Trade Practices Act.
Labor leader Mark Latham announced the policy in the NSW town of Bonalbo yesterday and stated that dairy farmers had been treated too harshly by competition, having to sell their milk in an unfair trading environment.
Under the Labor policy, dairy co-operatives and processors would be required to face a Productivity Commission investigation; the Bureau of Statistics would be asked for more comprehensive figures on wholesale prices; collective bargaining by farmers would be supported; and unconscionable conduct provisions in the Trade Practices Act would be tightened.
