Cane farmers picking cotton to bail out industry
27 Jul 2004

Cane growers are testing a completely new crop as a potential means of developing a new income stream. A small group of farmers in north Queensland's Burdekin region has teamed up with Queensland Cotton Holdings to try cotton-growing. The group is growing a few hundred bales as part of a Winter crop to be harvested later this year. The quality of the cotton won't be known until harvest.

Queensland Cotton CEO Richard Haire said the Queensland Government has been supportive, as have sugar industry researchers, but there are still many hurdles to clear. The key issue will be insects, as well as cotton quality and climatic extremes. In the real tropics, Mr Haire said, there's a prolific range of insects which are very hard to control.
