Few cane growers willing to leave the land 19 Oct 2004
Just 16 sugar cane growers have taken up the federal government's offer of $100,000 each to leave the industry. The federal government had provided a funding package of $440 million package to facilitate a restructure of the industry, and sufficient to enable more than 4,000 cane farmers to leave the land. A revival in sugar prices may have persuaded growers to stick with their business.
