Biofuels on the nose 23 Jan 2008
Governments around the world are starting to seriously question the environmental benefits of biofuels. Evidence is building that shows the total emissions from environmental damage and the energy required for production means that the net outcome is often worse than can be achieved with fossil fuels. Sweden and Germany have introduced tough laws that require biofuels to meet sustainability criteria before they receive any special treatment. Quebec has halted a program of building subsidised corn ethanol plants due to concerns around the availability of feedstock and the greenhouse gas emissions the process produced.
