Cotton growers accused of soaking up floodwaters 24 Jan 2008
The NSW government is investigating complaints that cotton growers are taking as much as 80 per cent of the floodwaters flowing into the Murray-Darling system. The Warrego River just north of the Toorale cotton station in the northwest of the state was flowing at a rate of between 2400 and 3000 megalitres per day this week, however the amount of water that makes it past a series of dams is only 600 megalitres each day. NSW Water Minister said that given that there is likely to be less water in the system due to climate change, the current licenses provided to cotton farmers would have to be reviewed as they may not be sustainable. The cotton growers have said that the water they take from the system is minimal and that the people complaining would like no upstream development at all so that they could have all the water.
