Government ready for water buy-backs 25 Jan 2008
The federal Climate Change and Water Minister Penny Wong has said that the government will commence a program of water buy-backs this year. Senator Wong said that there is already clear evidence of over-allocation in some of the Murray-Darling tributaries so will be seeking willing sellers while ruling out compulsory acquisitions. The latest CSIRO predictions are for flows into the Murray-Darling continuing to slow with the Oven system in Victoria expected to send 13 per cent less water into the Murray by 2030.
