Farmers miss out on winter crop
1 Feb 2008

While record prices are being achieved for commodities some are concerned that they will not be able to afford to grow a crop. The latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics show that farm debt has blown out from $25 billion in 2001-02 to $47 billion last year. The cost of servicing debt, along with increased prices for fertilisers, herbicides and fuel, is making it hard for some farmers to finance a crop. A group of mayors in NSW has joined together to urge the federal government to provide but the Agriculture Minister, Tony Burke, has said support to plant a winter crop would not be considered.
