Inquiry into fertiliser prices 22 Feb 2008
Prices for fertilisers and chemicals have more than doubled over the past year, eating into farm profits as many try to recover from years of drought. A federal Senate committee has been established this week to look into the implications of the increases for farmers and will also see if there is any evidence of monopolistic and cartel behaviour. The committee will be chaired by NSW Liberal senator Bill Heffernan said that the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission will be asked to give evidence to determine whether there is any anti-competitive behaviour going on. Senator Heffernan also said that confidential submissions will be allowed in case there are potential witnesses concerned about intimidation or retaliation.
